From sprained ankles to double hip replacements, St. Mary's does it all. High tech diagnostics like MRI, CT and arthroscopic surgery help physicians diagnose even highly complex problems. Our state-of-the-art surgical facilities, rehab services and the region's only inpatient acute rehab center help patients get back to their highest level of function as soon as possible. In addition, our post-rehab program, Wellness Center and Joint Support Group help orthopedic patients continue their progress and stay fit for life. St. Mary's is proud to rank in the top 5 percent of hospitals nationwide for quality in knee replacement surgery.

A highlight of our commitment to orthopedic services is St. Mary's Joint Replacement Center. We start with the simple concept that joint replacement patients aren't sick. As a result, we're better able to help them understand - and participate in - every step in their treatment. This program provides:

  • Extensive patient and family education
  • An individualized plan of care that lets each patient know what to expect at every step from diagnosis to recovery
  • Group interaction, meals and therapy during the patient's hospital stay
  • Post-surgery rehabilitative services to allow the patient to achieve the fullest possible recovery and return to a more active lifestyle
  • The individual compassion and caring touch for which St. Mary's is known.

Orthopedic surgeries are performed by an outstanding staff of physicians who have privileges to practice at St. Mary's, as well as St. Mary's caring, highly specialized team of anesthesiologists, nurses, technicians and more. The respected team of orthopedic surgeons performs more than 2,500 orthopedic surgeries a year, a key indicator of proficiency and leadership in the field. In 2002, for example, St. Mary's orthopedic surgery teams performed:

  • 739 inpatient orthopedic surgeries
  • 550 total joint procedures
  • 1,341 outpatient orthopedic surgeries

St. Mary's is at the forefront in orthopedic services and is recognized by area surgeons and physicians as a premier orthopedic surgery center. In conjunction with Ormonde Mahoney, M.D., of Athens Orthopedic Clinic, Stryker Orthopaedics, and the University of Georgia, St. Mary's hosts frequent training sessions from surgeons from Eurpose and Asia. These sessions give international surgeons valuable insight into the most up-to-date techniques for minimally invasvie surgeries and rapid recoveries. St. Mary's is one of only a handful of hospitals in the nation offering High Performance Joint Replacement services.
